Here is a central plaza of this town, and the distant front is a church.
On this day, a painting exhibition by children of each country had been held.
The children that wore the ethnic costume of the own country had opened their paintings up the stone pavement.

In 1165, Evora was liberated from Islam power by the attack of soldier Giraldo, and Reconquista of Portugal was nearing an end.
The name of the plaza is the name of this hero.

About Evora and Vasco da Gama
Evora had prospered as a center place in southern Portugal from the Roman era, and particularly became an eminent city of arts and sciences, in the Renaissance period and the Age of Discovery.
Vasco da Gama found the seaway that reaches India with circumnavigating the Africa southernmost cape first in the world.

Why are there his statue and his street in this place?
It is related to Portuguese topography and history.

Portugal was divided to the north and south by the many rivers that had flowed into the Atlantic.
As for main rivers from the north, R. Minho flows along the border with Spain, R. Douro flows through Porto, and R. Tejo flows through Lisbon from Toledo.
The Portuguese civilization progressed to north from the south, from the Roman era to the Moorish era (Islam).
However, as Reconquista had begun in the northern part of Iberian Peninsula, Christian went to south sequentially with using these rivers as the separator line.
And Lisbon and Evora were regained, and Reconquista was completed in 1249.
This was earlier than Spain for 200 years.
Portugal achieved a unified state in the 13th century, in 1415, conquered a city on the opposite shore of Straits of Gibraltar and achieved the advance into Africa.
This is said to be the beginning of the Age of Discovery in Europe.
After this, Portugal went sequentially to African western sea in the south, and then they obtained many gold, farm products, and a slave, and accelerated the exploratory voyage.

In those days, Evora had been the key junctions of trade among the northern part, the southern part and Spain, and Evora near capital city Lisbon became an important place of the arts and sciences.
Vasco da Gama (1460-1524) was born in an port town near Evora, and learned the navigation (the mathematics or the astronomy) in this Evora
In 1497, he was appointed by the king in Evora, and left for the exploratory voyage to India from Lisbon in order to perform direct trade of the pepper.
He succeeded and brought Portugal vast wealth.
For five years between his two voyages, he lived in Evora.

On the other hand, Spanish Columbus had found the American Continent in 1493, but further, the exploratory voyage was necessary for more than half a century until when Spain obtained the wealth.

On the next time, I introduce Lisbon.
