Traveling to Spain and Portugal 15: Pearls of Islam, Alhambra, on the trip 6th day, October 17

Patio de Arrayanes, Torre de Comares upon the back of it

< 1.  Patio de Arrayanes, Torre de Comares upon the back of it >

I guide you to the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, today.
In this palace, the building beauty and mind of Islam are condensed.

< 2.  map of Andalusia and Granada, the map’s top is the north

Upper fig.: Major cities of Andalusia.
I already introduced two cities of the blue dot and will introduce Seville of the black dot later.
Granada of the red dot is near by Sierra Nevada in the southeast, and the Mediterranean Sea in the south.
From when Cordoba was conquered by Christian about the middle of 13th century, Granada became the last Islam dynasty of Spain.

Ronda was under the control of this dynasty until when Granada had been conquered by Christian (the end of 15th century).

Lower fig.:  A yellow frame is Alhambra, a blue frame is Generalife(villa), and a red frame is the palace area that I guide you to today.
Alhambra and the villa stand in hill.

The breadth of above photo is equivalent toabout 200 m.
Our sightseeing of this palace began at 7:20(photo 1) and was over at 8:10(photo 26).

1:  Castle wall that surrounds the castle is in the left.
We walked through forest that had begun to change color as receiving a morning chill.

2:  Brown buildings are “Puerta de la Justicia” for the only inside of this castle and palace
Below my eyes, I saw the city of Granada where the glow of sunrise remained.

3:  The front and the inside of Palacio de the Carlos
This palace of Italy Renaissance style was built after when Granada had been conquered by Christian.

Now, go to palace entrance

< 5.  Now, go to palace entrance >

5:  Two towers are a part of Alcazba, and the remains of old palace that began about the 9th century have spread to the back of these.
6:  A small gate to the palace, and Torre de Comares in the left.
I photographed it to the opposite direction from the position same as photo 5.

7,8:  Sala del Mexuar.
The ceiling was made of butcher block or woodcarving, and the upper part of wall was made by stuccowork.
Although this place was the oldest building in this palace and was Royal Courts of Justice in those days, it was rebuilt to chapel after the conquest.
Over the years, Alhambra had been mended and had been built an extension, and some parts were rebuilt after the conquest.
After that, it has been left derelict, but it is going on mend now.

To Patio del Mexuar

< 6.  To Patio del Mexuar >

9:  The window of a prayer room that overlooks the street.
10,11:   I photographed toward the north and the south from Patio del Mexuar.
There is a flower bowlwater basinin the center of the patio (yard), and the entrance gate of the photo 10 leads to Patio de los Araayanes.
Here, I notice that the entrance of the north has peristyle but the entrance of the south hasn't peristyle.

Is it a outcome of the device of that this peristyle blocks summer hot sunlight and when the sun becomes low, the sunlight comes farther into the next room?

12:  The ceiling of butcher block.
I associated Arabian mathematics that reached the supreme with the geometric design of the floor, wall and the ceiling.

A view toward the south side from Patio de Arrayanes

< 7.  A view toward the south side from Patio de Arrayanes >

The building is mirrored on the pond that approached the peristyle as smooth as glass, alike the topping photo 13.
After that, this style was adopted Taj Mahal in India.
The surface of the pond waves faintly with the water from the fountain of the both ends of this pond, and it invites coolness.

Salon de Embajadores ( inside Torre de Comares)

< 8. Salon de Embajadores ( inside Torre de Comares) >

15,17:   The north side of Salon de Embajadores, and the floor.
The floor, the wall and the ceiling become covered with poly-chromatic mosaic decoration.
The center of three niches of photo 15 was throne.
Once, the light of the prismatic colors came into the throne from a window of the stained glass of the rear.

16: Mocárabes (honeycomb works) of the entrance arch.

Patio de los Leones

< 9.  Patio de los Leones >

This patio that had been paved with stones all was lush garden once

< 10.  Patio de los Leones >

19:  there is a fountain in the center of each four rooms surrounding the patio.
The water from the fountain flows to the center of the patio through a slot.
Arabians thought water is important very much, and used it skillfully.
We will notice that the difference in level between the floor of each room and patio (garden) is a little.
Unlike Asia of much humidity, they seem to enjoy the garden in same eye level.

20: Patio de los Leones.
The twelve lions indicate the 12 houses of zodiac, and the whole image symbolizes that the sun supports the sea (basin).
This originates from certain statue of a temple that Israeli King Solomon had made ages ago.

21:  Openwork.

< 11.  Sala de Abencerrajes that contacts with Patio de los Leones >

22:   the octagonal ceiling is covered with Mocárabes (honeycomb works).
This decoration is made by that countless plaster parts are put with stacking in three dimensions.
This originates from an incident that Muhammad that was founder of Islam listened to a voice of God in certain cave, and images the cave.
It is dark in many rooms, and even if there is window, it is small or is in a high place.
This seems to be for ventilation and for radiant heat control.
23:  Arabesque design of stuccowork of the wall.
The plaster is used more frequently in Islamic architecture.

a view of Albaicin

< 12.  a view of Albaicin >

This place is the oldest town in the city, and was the town of the Muslim.

Patio de la Reja

< 13.  Patio de la Reja. >

25:  Photo 24 of when I looked down from the passage with handrail.
We leave this patio and go to the big garden.

On the next time, I introduce the garden, Generalife and flowers.
